One ‘important’ Sheffield Wednesday player has been tipped to earn a call-up for the Euro 2024 tournament.
Sheffield Wednesday had six players called up to their national teams for the most recent international break in March.
Ian Poveda, Ike Ugbo, Joey Phuthi and Di’Shon Bernard all featured for their senior teams, with the latter helping Jamaica qualify for Copa America next month.
Meanwhile, James Beadle, Bailey Cadamarteri and Pierce Charles also joined up with their respective youth sides.
The Owls haven’t had so many players featuring on the international stage for quite a while, however with four of those on loan, they are now back to lacking in representation among the national teams.
None of their senior players are currently on track to jet off to the Euro 2024 tournament either, with Poveda, Ugbo, Phuthi and Bernard all playing in North America, South America and Africa.
Liam Palmer tipped for international recall
However, journalist Joe Crann has now tipped Liam Palmer to make the step up from the Championship to the European tournament this summer.
Taking to X, Crann wrote: “I do wonder whether Liam Palmer has been discussed by Scotland ahead of the Euros… The Scots have some big injury concerns, and squad sizes just increased. Ended the season unbeaten, scored important goals, and has showcased his versatility again.”
Where would the defender fit into Scotland’s team?
Scotland could be without Grant Hanley, Kieran Tierney, Nathan Patterson and Aaron Hickey as they jet off to Germany next month.
Steve Clarke’s only real option to bring in is Anthony Ralston, who has managed only five starts for Celtic this season.
Palmer racked up eight competitive international caps for Scotland until he fell out of favour back in 2021.
Wednesday’s return to the Championship and Palmer’s positive impact on their relegation battle this term has surely caught Clarke’s eye in recent months.
The 32-year-old has heaps of experience and can prove to be a real leader for a number of young players in the squad.
The only reason why Palmer might not fit into Clarke’s plans is because Scotland will often play with a back three, so fitting in at right wing-back may be unlikely.
The defender’s versatility would still be useful for Scotland and could also play centrally, though they do have a long list of centre-backs who would be a challenge to overcome – many of who play in the Championship.
