This Sheffield Wednesday star is being eyed up for a shock international call up.
Sheffield Wednesday don’t have too many internationals in their ranks.
Devis Vasquez is Colombian’s no.2 goalkeeper, Jeff Hendrick is still involved with the Republic of Ireland side, Juan Delgado plays for Chile, and Di’Shon Bernard for Jamaica.
And it looks like Bernard could potentially have a Wednesday teammate joining him in the Reggae Boys’ set up, with Bailey Cadamarteri being eyed by the CONCACAF outfit.
Bailey Cadamarteri being lined up for Jamaica call
The Star have reported that the Jamaican FA have ‘shown an interest’ in trying to get the 18-year-old Sheffield Wednesday star to potentially commit his international allegiance to Jamaica.
Cadamarteri has burst onto the scene this season with three goals in 11 Championship outings for the Owls and qualifies for the Jamaican national side through his father Danny Cadamarteri, who played for Everton in the 1990s and early 00s and is of Jamaican descent.
The Star also add that Cadamarteri has ‘been on the radar for England’s youth team for some time now’ and was recently labelled as ‘brilliant’ by Owls skipper Barry Bannan.
Too soon for the Sheffield Wednesday star to decide his allegiance
Right now, Cadamarteri will surely be focused on further embedding himself into the starting XI and continuing his development.
He’s only just broken onto the scene and whilst he’s made an immediate impact, it may be too soon to start thinking about international allegiances.
Still, it’s a credit to his potential and it’s an exciting possibility for Cadamarteri to become a Jamaican international at such a young age, and he’ll have Bernard to consult on the matter too.
It’s also a credit to Wednesday’s youth academy.
The Owls’ ranks hasn’t had much of a bridge to the first-team in recent years. But Rohl’s arrival and subsequent showing of faith in the youth academy has uncovered a star in Cadamarteri, hopefully with a couple more in the making in Joey Phuthi and Gui Siqueira.
Not only will this entice the current youth players to stay at the club and vie for a spot in the first-team, but it could also encourage players in other academies to want to come to Wednesday and ply their trade at Melwood, as they know there’s a route into the first-team.
Sheffield Wednesday are back in action against Cardiff City in the FA Cup this weekend, before a trip to Southampton the following Saturday resumes league duties.
