Sam Winnall’s chances of featuring in Monday’s Steel City Derby may have taken another hit on Friday afternoon.

Winnall was part of the Sheffield Wednesday Under-23s’ side that lost 4-1 at Charlton Athletic.

And the 28-year-old’s goalless run continued against the Addicks, with Wednesday’s consolation scored by Warren Clarke instead.

Given that Lucas Joao faces a battle to be fit for United’s visit, there could be a bench place available for Winnall at Hillsborough.

As things stand, however, Steve Bruce would surely prefer a half-fit Joao in his squad than the struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers product – who could soon have Gary Hooper for company in the Owls’ U23s.
