Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has explained his reasoning behind dropping Akin Famewo in the 2-0 win over Rotherham United.
The Owls got their first Championship win of the season in their 14th game, with a first half brace from Michael Smith getting the Owls all three points.
Whilst Wednesday do remain bottom of the table, this win will give them a huge confidence boost going forward, especially with it coming in a Yorkshire derby against one of their rivals.
Rohl explains why 24-year-old was dropped
Famewo was dropped after starting in Rohl’s first two games at left back for Reece James, and Rohl explained to the Sheffield Star his reasoning for dropping the 24-year-old.
“I spoke with Akin. His performance in the two matchdays was not amazing but he made good things. Today I decided against Akin, he was a little bit tired from the last two games and it’s important we don’t overload to handle this. For sure he was a little bit disappointed, but he is open-minded, he understood this and next week he is fresh and can go in the next training sessions.
“We have just 20 positions in the squad. It was a very hard decision, I know it is always difficult for a manager when you have a big squad and I have to decide this.”
Famewo not helped bieng played out of position
Famewo has been criticised for his performances at left back, but it is understandable, albeit not his fault as he has been playing out of position, with Rohl saying he trained well at left back being the reasoning why.
Famewo is playing at a higher level on a regular basis, as he has primarily played League One football over the past few seasons.
So coupling that with being out of position, probably will not do him many favours.
James started ahead of him in the win over Rotherham, with Famewo not in the squad.
He has made eleven appearances so far this season for Wednesday.
