Steve Bruce could cost Newcastle United ‘more than £5 million’ after asking permission from Sheffield Wednesday to speak to his boyhood club, according to the Times.
The newspaper claims Bruce made his request to the Wednesday chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, last night.
And it adds that Chansiri is preparing to play hard-ball over the 58-year-old’s future.

Chansiri gave Bruce close to a month off work before beginning his Sheffield Wednesday tenure, and inserted a compensation clause of more than £5m into his contract, according to the Times.

The Thai businessman has adopted a similar stance with a number of Owls stars in recent years, with Jack Hunt the only player sold for a significant transfer fee throughout his Hillsborough reign.
And that could prove his most effective tactic to keep Newcastle at bay.
But with Bruce seemingly set on managing the Magpies, an opportunity he might never get again, Chansiri is at risk of souring his relationship with the popular Sheffield Wednesday boss, should he get him to stay put.
