Sheffield Wednesday promotion hero Josh Windass has emerged as a transfer target for Southampton. The Owls won promotion last month after a goal scored by the forward in the final minute of extra time.
Now, The Star claim that Windass has been on the radar of Southampton for months and they could move this summer. Incoming boss Russell Martin is also thought to be happy to sanction the deal.
Windass signed for Wednesday in 2020 from Wigan. He has been a very decent performer for the Owls but he is about to enter the final year of his contract at Hillsborough this summer.
This isn’t the first time that Darren Moore has been forced to fend off interest in the 29-year-old. The Owls have previously rejected bids from Millwall and Argentinean outfit Atletico Talleres.
Windass enjoyed a quality 2022/23 campaign which culminated in the winning goal at Wembley. He scored 16 goals for Wednesday and also registered seven assists from 42 appearances.
Southampton will hope to have a good season following relegation from the Premier League. It’s the first time in 12 years they will have to tackle the Champioship and they will strengthen their squad.
Moore is a huge fan of his attacker and he won’t want to lose him. Shortly after winning promotion, he told The Star: “He’s a top man, everybody knows that. He’s brilliant, he’s just a really nice person.”
Southampton want Wednesday star Windass
This would be a hammer blow for Wednesday to start the summer with. Ultimately, however, it simply represented that the Owls are a club on the up and it’s only natural that their players will grab the attention of other clubs.
Windass is seemingly happy at Wednesday. He gives his all every time he pulls on the blue and white jersey and he was brilliant as the Owls secured promotion to the Championship at Wembley.
Southampton will expect to have a good season during 2023/24. Although they will lose some of their stars, they are a club that has a brilliant academy and they should at least challenge for the play-offs.
Wednesday will hope to strengthen and not weaken their squad though. Losing Windass wouldn’t be ideal and the Owls will hope to reject any advances from their divisional rivals.
