Slaven Bilic missed out on the Sheffield Wednesday manager’s job because he was asking for too much money, says Alan Nixon.
The 54-year-old Bilic was among the names linked with the Sheffield Wednesday job. Instead, another former Watford boss in Xisco Munoz was named as Darren Moore’s successor and Bilic has since been named manager of Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Fateh.
And this morning, Nixon has revealed on his Patreon account that Bilic was in fact interviewed for the Sheffield Wednesday job, but that the Croatian was asking for too much money to take charge and eventually priced himself out of the job.
Munoz took charge of his first game as Sheffield Wednesday boss yesterday, with the Spaniard overseeing a 1-1 draw away at York City in what was the Owls’ first pre-season friendly.
Bilic wanting the big bucks
It’s no surprise. He’s an experienced and proven manager and he would’ve been a huge coup for the Owls – it’s also no surprise to hear that Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri wasn’t willing to meet his wage demands, as revealed by Nixon.
Bilic though has taken on a job in Saudi Arabia and he’ll no doubt be earning big money over there. But Wednesday have Munoz in place now and everyone seems to be rallying behind him ahead of the new season, with the Spaniard having plenty of work to do before the season opener v Southampton at the start of next month.
Up next though is a trip to Chesterfield on Tuesday as the Owls’ pre-season plans move forward. After that, Sheffield Wednesday jet off to Spain to face Murcia.
