Sheffield Wednesday are in talks to sign Blackpool’s Reece James, reports The Star.

James, 29, spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. The full-back featured 28 times in League One fixtures, scoring once and assisting three as the Owls won promotion back to the Championship.

The Blackpool man played in all three of Wednesday’s play-off games, scoring one of the six goals that Wednesday put past Peterborough United in the second leg of the semi-finals.

There’s been reports suggesting that James is wanted back at Hillsborough in time for next season with his parent club Blackpool having been relegated, and now The Star have confirmed that discussions are underway for the Blackpool man to return, but that nothing has been agreed as of yet.

After Wednesday’s promotion, James spoke about what the summer ahead might hold for him, and he hinted at a possible return to Hillsborough ahead of the 2023/24 season.

He said:

“I fell in love with the club, the city, everything about it – but I’ll have to see what happens, what plays out over the summer. I’ll be patient. I’ve absolutely loved my time here, and we’re all Wednesday aren’t we?”

James back to Hillsborough…

James certainly showcased his quality last season. He’s a very well-rounded and dependable player in defence and he’s also someone that Darren Moore knows well, having had James at Doncaster Rovers in the past.

With Blackpool dropping back down to the Championship as well, the Seasiders could be forced into parting ways with the Englishman this summer and Wednesday look to be at the front of the queue.

The Star’s report seems to confirm that the Owls have a very strong interest in James but that a deal still has some work to be done, so this is one for Owls fans to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.

Expect James to be one of several arrivals at Sheffield Wednesday this summer.
