Sheffield Wednesday have firmed up their interest in Rotherham United forward Chiedozie Ogbene. The Owls have the Millers firmly in their sights once again following promotion to the Championship
According to The Star, Wednesday have now held talks to try and poach Ogbene on a free transfer. Darren Moore isn’t the only manager keen on the player, however, with Ipswich and Plymouth also keen.
Wednesday definitely need some options to bolster their attack. Ogbene has developed into a quality player at the New York Stadium having signed for the club from Brentford.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a decent campaign during 2022/23. He scored nine goals and registered four assists from 42 appearances as Rotherham avoided relegation back to League One.
Ogbene is a regular in the Republic of Ireland setup these days too. He’s made 14 appearances for the nation, scoring four goals along the way and he’s set for a bright future on the international stage.
Now, talks have taken place between the Owls and the relevant parties. It’s understood that at this stage, the talks have been to simply declare their interest in signing the exciting player.
Wednesday want Ogbene and deal would be a good one
Rotherham must be growing quite tired of Wednesday. Last summer the Owls took Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith from the Millers and their fans might be getting a sense of deja vu.
Ogbene would be a great signing on a free transfer. He now has over 50 appearances in the Championship under his belt and at 26, he’s approaching his prime as a player.
Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny was delighted with the player back in March. He called him ‘spectacular’ after the winger scored in a 2-2 draw against Belgium.
It’s claimed in the report that a deal could be done in the coming weeks. If Wednesday can get this deal over the line, it would definitely represent a good start to the summer transfer window.
Ogbene, 26, is at a nice age where he could continue to kick on in the coming years. He’s proven in the Championship and moving to Wednesday could see him take his career to the next level.
