Sheffield Wednesday look set to confirm their first signing of the summer in youngster Sam Reed, reports The Star.
Reed, 20, spent time on trial with Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the year. He’s been playing his football for non-league side Brighouse Town but was handed a trial with the Owls’ U21 side back in February, where he played in a match against Sheffield United’s U21 side.
And U21s boss Neil Thompson spoke fondly of Reed after the game, saying:
“He’s done really well. He’s got a great attitude, and he’s a local lad. He’s been playing for a team in Leeds and he’s been smashing. He’s a great kid to have about, left-footer, and does what it says on the tin. I thought he was really steady today.”
Now, The Star are reporting that Wednesday are keen to sign Reed on a permanent basis ahead of the 2023/24 season. Their report adds that Reed, who can operate as a left-back of as a left-sided centre-back, has also been training with the club recently and that he looks set to join up with the team for the start of their pre-season later this summer.
There’s no official word on the signing but it looks like Reed could become the Owls’ first signing of a potentially very busy summer transfer window.
One for the future
As per The Star, Reed will initially link up with Sheffield Wednesday’s development sides, in the hope that he can eventually progress into the first-team fold.
It’s a big step up for Reed who has only played non-league football so far in his career. It’s a very exciting move for him and it seems like a very exciting move for the Owls too, who perhaps need to have a bit more focus on youth production and development.
But this signing could be an indication of where Wednesday want to go in the next few seasons. Still, ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, Moore needs to add some Champisonhip quality and Championship experience to his ranks, to ensure that his side have what it takes to beat the drop next time round.
