Everton are prepared to loan out young striker Tom Cannon, says Alan Nixon.

Sheffield Wednesday are one of the sides being linked with a move for the Irishman who shone on loan at Preston North End in the second half of last season.

The 20-year-old scored eight goals in 20 Championship outings for Preston and the Lilywhites are interested in a return, though they face competition from the likes of Birmingham City, Stoke City, Sunderland, and Sheffield Wednesday.

And the latest on this situation is that Everton are ready to send Cannon out on loan this summer, potentially handing a boost to the Owls as they look for new additions ahead of next season.

Preston boss Ryan Lowe is a huge fan of Cannon’s, labelling the young striker as ‘excellent’ during last season.

Xisco Munoz added a new striker to his ranks last night in Ashley Fletcher, who’s joined on loan from Watford ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Do Wednesday have a chance?

Cannon looks destined to leave on loan now after this latest update from Nixon, and the Championship looks like his likeliest destination.

But after seeing how well he did with Preston, Everton will surely want him to go to a side who’ll be challenging at the top end of the table and that might count Wednesday out of the race.

Many are expecting them to struggle next season and given the current sate of the squad, it could well be a real struggle for Munoz and his new side.

But with a few more signings the Owls could enjoy a comfortable campaign – Cannon would be a huge signing but right it seems like an unrealistic one.
