Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb have taken a surprise interest in Sheffield Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa, reports Alan Nixon.
Iorfa, 28, has been with Sheffield Wednesday since 2019. The former Wolves man joined on a permanent deal midway through the 2018/19 season and he’s been a key player ever since, racking up 135 total appearances for the club with 35 of those coming in League One last season.
He played a key role in the club’s promotion, playing in all three of their play-off fixtures and playing in all 120 minutes of the play-off final v Barnsley.
Now though, Nixon is reporting on his Patreon page that Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb have taken an interest in Iorfa, who is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Hillsborough.
The Croatian club are managed by former Liverpool midfielder Igor Biscan and will be playing in the Champions League qualifiers later this month.
Former Owls boss Daren Moore was a huge admirer of Iorfa’s. After a strong run of form following the turn of the year, Moore hailed Iorfa, telling The Star:
“I think he’s been superb, I think he’s gone to another level. I think we’re seeing the very best of Dominic Iorfa, and some. There’s more to come from him.”
Iorfa set for shock summer exit?
Whoever the incoming Wednesday boss is, they’ll be wanting Iorfa to stick around for next season and aid them in their Championship campaign.
But Nixon’s report will come as a worry to Sheffield Wednesday and to fans – Iorfa is one of Wednesday’s better and more consistent performers, with his Championship experience bound to be useful next season.
His potential exit though could be dependent on the club’s financial state. Whether it’s good or bad remains to be seen, but the recent saga involving Moore could suggest that it’s more bad than good, so Owls players could be up for sale.
Then again, with so few players on their books, selling players doesn’t seem very smart.
