Journalist Joe Crann felt that Sheffield Wednesday star Mallik Wilks gave a good account of himself last night. The Owls lost 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion in another drab performance.
Wilks only came on for the final 14 minutes of the clash last night. He couldn’t prevent Wednesday from slipping to yet another defeat that leaves them rooted to the foot of the Championship.
Wilks has struggled with injury issues of late. He barely played last season either and missed the run-in as Wednesday won promotion to the second tier via the play-offs.
Crann praised Wednesday player Wilks
It proved a very useful cameo for the 24-year-old last night. Getting some minutes into his legs is a must and his versatility to play on either flank or as a striker could be useful.
Crann said on Twitter: “Mallik Wilks among those to head over to clap the away end. Didn’t have long on the pitch, but thought he looked relatively bright in tough conditions when he came on.”
Wilks will now be looking for more game time as Wednesday prepare to face Huddersfield and Darren Moore at Hillsborough on Saturday.
He is desperate to stay fit and he will want to prove a point to those who have doubted him. Wilks is an attacking player who will be keen to impress and hopefully, he can keep impressing Xisco Munoz.
Wilks can be vital this season
Last season, Wilks managed 24 appearances for Wednesday. He scored twice and claimed five assists in League One and perhaps the jury is still out on the player.
Still, the Owls aren’t blessed with plenty of proven attacking quality and perhaps Wilks can help. His versatility to play anywhere in the final third will certainly come in handy.
As a hardworking player and one who has experience playing in the Championship, he could be vital this season. Munoz now has a decision over whether to play him on Saturday or not.
