Sheffield Wednesday are currently in Spain for their pre-season tour, with the Owls going up against Murcia later this evening.
Sheffield Wednesday have so far played two pre-season friendlies – a 1-1 draw v York City followed up by a 2-1 win over Chesterfield.
Next up is Murcia and they’ll be Wednesday’s toughest test of the summer so far. But the tour also gives new boss Xisco Munoz a chance to take a look at some potential new signings – one of them being Ben Heneghan.
The 29-year-old was let go by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season after seeing his 2022/23 campaign curtailed by a serous knee injury.
And when asked about a potential fresh deal for Heneghan, Munoz said:
“Right now all the players here are part of our group, and after that the time will come for me to make my decisions. It’s one of the important things when a coach arrives, I need to watch everybody we have in our squad, and afterwards we’ll select how we can improve it.”
Meanwhile, Will Vaulks is due to fly out to Spain to join up with his teammates after missing the first day of the pre-season tour due to personal reasons.
And another familiar face linking up with the team this summer is former phsyio Dean Taylor. The Star say that Taylor is returning to the club after leaving nearly 10 years ago – he spent nearly 10 years working for the club previously.
Munoz has added other names to his backroom staff in recent weeks too, with all of Roberto Cuesta Roman, Miguel Munoz, and Antonello Brambilla joining in time for the new season.
Lastly, Munoz has suggested that Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on the signing of a new, unnamed goalkeeper.
The Owls have been linked with the likes of Burnley’s Bailey Peacock-Farrell and free agent Axel Werner so far this summer, with Werner the more recent of the two links.
Speaking to The Star, Munoz said:
“Also, for the keeper that in our minds is coming – because I think we’re close for an agreement – it’s important that they all three have a very good coach. I think Antonello is the best in this case for them.”
Tonight’s game v Murcia gets underway at 7pm.
