Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan has hailed new signing John Buckley, also revealing that he played a part in bringing the Blackburn Rovers man to Hillsborough on deadline day.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Jeff Hendrick and Buckley on loan on deadline day.

The signing of Buckley looks particularly impressive, especially so after the Owls fended off interest from the likes of Swansea City to land the player on a loan deal.

Bannan and Buckley share the same agent too, and the Wednesday legend has since revealed that he had a small part to play in bringing Buckley to Hillsborough.

Soeaking to The Star, Bannan said:

“He’s a top class player obviously and he’s proven in this league. My agent was asking if we were after midfielders and our manager said we were.

“The club have been working with my agent for a long time now because I’ve been here for a while so once he was available it was quite easy in the end – if anything is ever easy at Sheffield Wednesday!

“We were very happy in the end. I think he’s a great addition to the squad. It might mean I don’t play! But let’s see.”

Despite being only 23 years old, Buckley has already racked up 130 total appearances for Blackburn Rovers, scoring nine goals and creating 12 more along the way.

Bannan bringing Buckley to Wednesday…

Bannan continues to prove that he’s more than just a player for Sheffield Wednesday; he’s also a leader, and apparently, mediator in the transfer market.

Xisco Munoz though wanted midfielders and he got two good ones in Buckley and Hendrick, who both have a two-week break to get to grips with their new side, and to Munoz’s style of play.

The international break comes at a good time for Wednesday who still have just the one point on the board after a tough start to the 2023/24 season.

The Owls return to action v Ipswich Town later this month.
