Danny Rohl has heaped praise on one Sheffield Wednesday star who was asked to play in a different position against Birmingham City.
Sheffield Wednesday brought a poor run of results to an end on Friday night, as Ike Ugbo’s brace gifted them their first win in seven games.
The striker has received plenty of plaudits for his display, while new boy Ian Poveda also notched an assist on his first start since joining the club from Leeds United on loan.
Another player who is deserving of the credit that Danny Rohl has given him is Momo Diaby, who started the match as a shielding midfielder to allow Barry Bannan to play further forward.
The Frenchman only lasted around an hour before he was forced off with an injury, however Rohl still applauded him and has explained why he took up a new role.
Speaking to The Star, the manager said: “It was a good start for him again.
“He can keep the ball well. I want to have a relationship between Barry and Ian and I think Momo can give us the momentum to switch the game and he did well.”
Did Momo Diaby do enough in midfield?
Momo Diaby’s start against Birmingham City was his first since returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, though he did start all three FA Cup games since the turn of the year.
The 27-year-old’s more defensive role proved to be highly successful as they claimed all three points and conceded none.
Diaby made 36 touches and completed 88% of his passes, as well as making two clearances, two interceptions and two tackles.
The midfielder’s display gives Rohl another option if he wants to mix up the formation, while Will Vaulks is also ready to make an impact, with the German coach hailing him as ‘fantastic’ and ‘outstanding’ as he came onto replace Diaby.
It’s unclear how serious Diaby’s injury could be though, as it looked as if he was in some pain when he was forced off.
It will be a huge shame for him if he faces another absence after only just returning to the starting line-up, having spent the first half of the campaign not even registered in the squad.
