Marco Matias has revealed what he regrets about his spell at Sheffield Wednesday.
Marco Matias joined Sheffield Wednesday from Portuguese side Nacional in 2015 and spent four years at Hillsborough.
The winger netted eleven goals and provided 12 assists in 72 games for The Owls, though his final season was the only one relatively undisturbed.
Matias managed only 29 Championship appearances in his first three years, spending a majority of his time with Sheffield Wednesday on the sidelines.
The forward did feature in the Yorkshire outfit’s play-off campaign in his first season though, while he was suspended for the semi-finals the following year.
Sheffield Wednesday failed to win promotion on either occasion, and Matias has admitted that it was a huge shame that such a ‘fantastic’ club missed out.
Speaking to Portuguese outlet A Bola (as per Sport Witness), Matias said: “It was another reality, which was to play in England and, if possible, at the highest level.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t achieve that step and I would have liked to have done it for Sheffield and we had some chances of reaching the Premier League, but we always lost in the play-offs.
“It was a huge pain, because a club of that size, with fantastic fans and a spectacular structure, deserved to be in the Premier League.
“At the time I had some clubs which I could have chosen, but my dream was to play in England, and I am very happy with the experience I had there.”
The good old days at Sheffield Wednesday
Marco Matias didn’t return to England once he was released by Sheffield Wednesday in 2019, and instead went onto return to his home country with B-SAD, Nacional and Farense.
The attacker struggled to make an impact in the early years of his stint in Sheffield, though his final campaign when he netted six goals. Though perhaps if he had stayed fit and started with that form when were in the play-offs, then things could have gone differently.
The Owls were very unfortunate to miss out, especially with the likes of Fernando Fiorestieri, Gary Hooper and Steven Fletcher banging the goals in.
