Sheffield Wednesday were linked with Danish manager Jess Thorup during the summer and now he’s returned to management. The 53-year-old was under consideration before Xisco Munoz was handed the job.
Now, Thorup has taken over at Bundesliga outfit Augsburg. The top-flight side sit fourth from bottom in the table and have won just one of their seven matches during the current campaign.
Wednesday appointed a new manager themselves over the weekend. Danny Rohl is the man tasked with keeping the club in the Championship and he’s entered management for the very first time at Hillsborough.
Wednesday-linked Thorup now back in work
This would have been a very left-field choice by Wednesday in the summer. However, given the start that Munoz made, it’s unlikely he could have had the Owls in a much worse state had he been appointed.
Thorup is experienced when it comes to management. He’s been in charge of Gent, Genk, Midtjylland, FC Copenhagen and has also held positions with Denmark at Under-20 and Under-21 level.
Wednesday did fancy appointing Thorup but in the end, Munoz’s experience in the Championship helped sway the decision. It didn’t prove a useful one with Wednesday sitting bottom of the division with three points from 11 games.
Throup now has big job on his hands
It will be fascinating to see how the manager goes in his next role. If he does push Augsburg towards mid-table, Wednesday might have wished they’d tried harder to land him during the summer.
Rohl looks like an exciting appointment at Hillsborough, however. Although he’s never actually managed a team, he has held important positions with Southampton and the German national team.
Thorup might have proved a useful manager to bring to Wednesday, although it wouldn’t have been without risk. Although he’s held some reputable positions previously, it’s fair to say that none of his jobs compare with the Championship.
