One Sheffield Wednesday player is hoping to stay at the club beyond this season.
Sheffield Wednesday have a number of players out of contract this summer.
On that list are some big names, including the likes of Barry Bannan, Di’Shon Bernard, and Josh Windass; all of whom Danny Rohl is keen to keep at Hillsborough.
Another out of contract in the summer is veteran Liam Palmer; the 32-year-old recently made his 424th total appearance for the Owls, leaving him joint-ninth on the club’s all-time appearances list.
It comes after interest from the MLS in last month’s transfer window, but Palmer wants to stay at the club beyond this summer.
Liam Palmer hoping for new Sheffield Wednesday deal
Palmer recently spoke to The Star about his future in S6.
He said when asked if he and the club have had any conversations about his future beyond this season:
“Nothing yet. I know the manager said he’d get January out of the way (before dealing with contract extensions) in the press, but I’ve not spoken to him. Hopefully we’ll speak in the next few weeks. He’s said he’s got a list in his mind of the players he wants to keep. Hopefully I’m on that list.”
Palmer has played more of a back-up role for Sheffield Wednesday this season.
He’s still racked up 23 Championship appearances for the Owls, having played more of a role since Dominic Iorfa’s injury whilst also playing in a new midfield role under Rohl.
Last season was arguably Palmer’s most impressive in a Wednesday shirt; he featured 47 times in league fixtures, scoring six and assisting three along the way.
Why Danny Rohl should keep Palmer beyond this season
Regardless of what league Sheffield Wednesday find themselves in next season, keeping Palmer around seems like a smart choice.
He’s hugely experienced and passionate about the club, which during such a difficult time in the club’s history is vital.
Palmer wants to keep on playing for Sheffield Wednesday at a time when the club isn’t a very attractive place to be playing, so that kind of determination and passion should be exactly what Rohl wants in his players.
Palmer has also shown his versatility this season, playing at right-back and in defensive midfield, where he’s looked good on occasion.
With Championship survival still the paramount objective this season, expect contract conversations to be put on the backburner for a bit longer.
And with 13 games left to play, Palmer has a definite chance to prove himself to Rohl and the club.
