BBC Sheffield reporter Rob Staton says that Dean Smith has had no contact from Sheffield Wednesday regarding their vacant managerial position.

Sheffield Wednesday are without a manager after Darren Moore’s shock exit earlier in the month. A handful of names have since been linked with the club but a report from The Star earlier today revealed that the 52-year-old Dean Smith is the Owls’ first choice replacement for Moore.

But the former Sheffield Wednesday player, and former Walsall, Brentford, Aston Villa, Norwich City, and Leicester City boss Smith is yet to receive any contact from those at Hillsborough.

Staton tweeted earlier today:

It was claimed earlier this week that Sheffield Wednesday had opened talks with Smith, though that claim seems to be false.

Sheffield Wednesday earned promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs last season. Moore looked set to guide the club into next season and so his exit was certainly a surprising one.

Since, owner Dejphon Chansiri has said that the aim for Wednesday next season is a top six finish.

Wednesday’s managerial search goes on

Expect Smith to be one of several names that Wednesday have high up on their shortlist, but given his experience and availability, it’s be understandable if he is the club’s first choice.

But as per Staton’s tweet, there doesn’t seem to be any movement on this particular front and so Wednesday’s managerial search goes on.

With little over a month until the start of the new seasons, fans might be wondering how much transfer business their side can oversee next month – the Owls certainly need reinforcements but having no manager and no Head of Recruitment in place is definitely putting a delay on things.

Expect to see more information on Smith to Hillsborough in the coming days.
