The journalist who broke the news of Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in hiring Steve Bruce has delivered a warning to Newcastle United.
According to the Sun, Newcastle are readying an approach for the Wednesday manager, after making him their ‘top target’ to succeed Rafa Benitez.
And the newspaper claims Bruce would ‘jump at the chance’ to join his boyhood club, with the compensation required to free him from his Hillsborough contract ‘thought to be no more than £1 million’.
But according to Alan Nixon, who works for the Sun on a freelance basis, that is not in fact the case.
The experienced reporter tweeted the following, earlier:
Sheff Wed. Some shock at suggestion that Steve Bruce compo is 1m. It is much much more. Newcastle won’t be able to do this cheap …

SAKA, ANTONY AND 10 PREMIER LEAGUE STARS HEADING TO THEIR FIRST WORLD CUP
How much that figure would be remains to be seen.
But the more Sheffield Wednesday are able to recoup the better, given the Owls’ ongoing financial problems.
Wednesday completed their first summer signing in the shape of Julian Börner earlier, although according to the Star‘s Dom Howson, that deal was done within the constraints of the club’s soft transfer embargo, which remains in place.
Been asked a lot of questions about the Owls’ soft transfer embargo.
As things stand, it has not been lifted, despite Borner’s signing. Borner has been signed within the constraints of the embargo. #SWFC
