Sheffield Wednesday have had a whirlwind 48 hours, after owner Dejphon Chansiri revealed that the club has a £2million HMRC debt.
Sheffield Wednesday are under a registration embargo and owe £2million to HMRC.
Chansiri gave an interview recently in which he asked the fans to club together a give Sheffield Wednesday £2million in order to pay this debt.
It’s another controversial turn in what’s been a chaotic past few months for the Owls owner, who has only just put together a very strong-looking backroom team lead by new boss Danny Rohl.
And in a recent Q&A on Yorkshire Live, journalist Ricky Charlesworth was asked whether Rohl knew about Sheffield Wednesday’s financial problems before he came in, to which he responded:
“I’m sure he will have done his checks before agreeing to accept the job offer but not sure he’ll have known or expected this was on the horizon.”
Rohl has so far overseen three games in charge of Wednesday; defeats vs Watford and Plymouth Argyle, before guiding the Owls to their first win of the season vs Rotherham United last time out.
A mess. But can Rohl keep it real on the pitch?
Rohl’s task is clear; deliver results on the pitch. This financial mess is Chansiri’s to fix and not the fans’, but it seems like the fans could be called upon again soon to help bail the club out.
This £2million debt won’t be going anywhere and it could be a month-by-month wait for the Owls owner to get his cash flow issues resolved, or whatever it is he needs to do to make this problem go away.
For the time being though, the players seem to be really buying into what Rohl is trying to do, and that win over Rotherham will have done them a world of good.
Next up is a trip to Bristol City. The Robins are currently managerless and they could be another team there for the taking, though it’ll certainly be a much tougher test than Rotherham was.
