Sheffield Wednesday entered the November international break on the back of a defeat in the Steel City Derby as they continue to be inconsistent in the Championship.
Wednesday lost 1-0 to Sheffield United in the first Steel City derby in five years, leaving them in 15th place as the busy Christmas period approaches.
What will be most frustrating for Danny Rohl will be his side’s inconsistency, with the derby day defeat following Wednesday’s impressive 2-0 win over Norwich City, which was a brilliant response to the 6-2 humbling at the hands of Watford.

Finding a way to string some positive results together will undoubtedly be something the Owls coaching staff will be focusing on during the break in fixtures. However, Wednesday forward Josh Windass has pointed out another crucial flaw in his side this season.

Josh Windass concerned by ‘big dips’ in The Owls’ form
In an interview with Football League World, Windass initially made it clear that progress had been made under Rohl’s stewardship.
He said: “We’ve [Sheffield Wednesday] got a different mentality now. We believe we should win all the games we play in and that’s different to what it used to be like.”
However, Windass isn’t oblivious to the work that still needs to be done by himself and the first-team squad, claiming inconsistency as a key concern.
“That’s [inconsistency] our problem at the minute,” Windass said. “We’re such a good team but we don’t seem to have little dips, we have big dips.
“We’ll lose 4-0 or 6-2. But that’s part of developing as a team, you saw with the Norwich match that it didn’t affect us one bit, we went out and played good football against one of the best teams in the league.”
It seems as if The Owls are only small tweaks away from surging up the table, with Rohl concerned about Wednesday’s decision-making holding them back from being a top Championship side. Despite these tweaks, Windass is still aiming high for the rest of the campaign.
Windass targeting Sheffield Wednesday playoff push
After discussing Wednesday’s inconsistency, Windass remained confident about the abilities of his teammates.
He said: “When we played Norwich I was trying to make it clear to the dressing room that we’re a team that wants to be pushing for the play-offs so don’t think we were playing a superior team.
“I ain’t playing for 10th. If that’s where we finish then so be it, I’m not going to say that’s a failure or anything. But I never start any season hoping to finish 10th let me tell you.”
The Owls have a seven-point gap to make up to reach Watford in sixth place. With so much of the campaign still to play, this is a fairly achievable target if Wednesday can replicate performances like the one seen against Norwich at Hillsborough.
However, performances like the 6-2 defeat against Watford remain in Wednesday’s DNA. Rohl’s side will have to continue to work on their inconsistencies if they are to match Windass’ lofty ambitions.
