Jos Luhukay expresses delight after signing Sheffield Wednesday's Matt Penney

Jos Luhukay has expressed his delight after reuniting with his former Sheffield Wednesday player Matt Penney in Germany.

Luhukay has taken Penney on a season-long loan at new club FC St. Pauli, just over a year to the day since he gave the wing-back his debut for Wednesday.

And speaking to the Hamburg side’s official website earlier, the Dutch boss said: “I know Matt from our time together in Sheffield and I’m delighted we’ve been able to increase our options by signing him. He adds a lot of pace on the flank but can also be used in midfield.”

Luhukay is the manager under whom Penney has made each of his 17 Sheffield Wednesday appearances, with a shoulder injury ruling the 21-year-old out for the bulk of Steve Bruce’s reign.

And Penney said: “I’ve heard a lot about FC St. Pauli, the fans and the fantastic atmosphere.

“I can hardly wait to hook up with the team, get to know my teammates and play in front of 30,000 people at the Millerntor.”

Penney has slipped behind Liam Palmer and Morgan Fox in Sheffield Wednesday’s left-side pecking order, while the summer signing Moses Odubajo can also play there.

He is the latest young Owl to leave on loan, after Connor Kirby (Macclesfield) and Jack Stobbs (Livingston) – and he may not be the last.
