Sheffield Wednesday were said to be leading the race to sign Efe Ambrose in January (Teamtalk).

But it is Derby County that the Nigerian defender eventually joined, despite reports of interest from several other clubs, after terminating his Hibernian contract.

Five months on, however, Ambrose is once again without a club after Derby released him and four others.

And he leaves Pride Park without having made a single matchday squad, let alone played any senior football.

Considering the form of Tom Lees and, in particular, Michael Hector from Christmas time onwards, Ambrose is unlikely to have fared much better at Wednesday.

And it is perhaps even less plausible to imagine the Owls including him on their list of potential Hector replacements this summer.

It will nevertheless be interesting to see where Ambrose ends up next.

But in the meantime we can chalk this one up as a bullet dodged for Wednesday.
