Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl was buzzing that he was able to call upon three of his star players for the win over Preston. The Owls won 1-0 at Deepdale, with Marvin Johnson scoring the only goal of the game.
Rohl has seen Wednesday improve significantly since he replaced Xisco Munoz earlier this year. The Owls now have a fighting chance of survival and face Hull at Hillsborough on New Year’s Day.
The German manager has not only improved the team’s results but there is now an identity to the way in which Wednesday try and play. Survival in the Championship will still be tough but there is now confidence that it can be achieved.
Rohl buzzing to call upon three star Wednesday players
Against Preston, Rohl was able to play Anthony Musaba, Bailey Cadamarteri and Djeidi Gassama all at the same time. It gave the Owls the impetus to play on the front foot and ultimately claim a big three points.
Rohl was delighted after the game. He told The Star: “We played today with Musaba, Gassama and Bailey. This is great! These are our young boys and it is fantastic, this is what I like. It’s not easy to make a rotation but they did well in this team. They were fantastic.”
The three players contributed to a fine performance from the Owls in the North West. Wednesday had suffered defeats to Cardiff and Coventry in recent weeks and it was important some more points were obtained.
Rohl clearly wants younger players
Although the Wednesday squad has plenty of experience, it seems clear that Rohl would like some more youthful exuberance in his team on a more frequent basis.
Musaba has been a brilliant signing for Wednesday. He’s got five goals to his name since signing for the summer and in recent weeks, Cadamarteri has found the way to goal too.
Gassama has taken a little bit longer to settle at Hillsborough. He was also a summer signing and having arrived from PSG it seems clear that he will have bags of potential.
Wednesday is a club that prides itself on a glittering youth academy. As a result, it’s important that Rohl maintains those principles and it’s great that he’s so pleased to get the younger players on the pitch.
