Sheffield Wednesday have a front-runner for the vacant manager’s position; Danny Rohl.
Sheffield Wednesday look likely to appoint Rohl, 34, as their next boss, after parting ways with Xisco Munoz last week.
Various outlets are reporing that Rohl is the leading candidate to take charge at Hillsborough. But Joe Crann insists that the deal is not done and that patience is needed.
Rohl is out of work after recently leaving his position on the coaching staff with the German national side, having held similar positions with RB Leipzig and Southampton in the past.
And Rohl was a contender to come to Sheffield Wednesday over the summer too; he was interview by Dejphon Chansiri, but eventually overlooked for Munoz.
Now, former Sheffield Wednesday man Carlton Palmer has had his say on Rohl’s potential Wednesday appointment, telling Football League World:
“Danny was interviewed originally for the Owls job in the summer, but was overlooked in favour of Xisco. I can understand that Xisco having previous managerial experience with Watford, but as I’ve said previously, his two jobs prior to becoming the Sheffield Wednesday manager were not successful.
“So, it’s always a difficult one, all number two’s or coaches don’t automatically convert into head coaches, but some do. Perfect example Enzo Maresca, who is doing a fabulous job at Leicester, sitting top of the league and never been a head coach before.
“Rohl has a wealth of experience as an assistant, previously working at Southampton, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and with the German national team. But this is hell of a difficult situation at Sheffield Wednesday to come into, and I would have thought they would have tried to appoint somebody with a lot of managerial experience.
“I’ve always not been afraid of making bold decisions and giving people an opportunity, so we would just have to see how this one pans out if Danny is appointed.”
Danny Rohl to Sheffield Wednesday?
For both Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday; there doesn’t seem to be much to lose here.
For Rohl, the Wednesday job is almost a free hit given how poor they are and how little people are expecting of them this season.
And it’s a first step into management too, and exposure to the English game which would surely be beneficial for his CV and his experience.
And for Wednesday, if Rohl succeeds then they have a young, contemporary coach at the helm, and if he doesn’t then they’re simply in the position they’re in now.
Wednesday are in a mess right now and something needs to be done. Chansiri made a good decision in sacking Munoz but he now needs to make another good decision when hiring the next manager.
Palmer is unsure and many Owls fans may also be unsure, given Rohl’s lack of experience and the magnitude of the situation at Wednesday.
