Writing in his Q&A session this week, Sheffield Wednesday journalist Dom Howson has named David Agbontohoma as one of the players currently on trial with the Owls.

The Owls’ U23s side fielded a number of trialists last week, and as ever, there was a sense of intrigue around who was playing for the youth side.

We don’t know the identity of all of the players who turned out for the U23s as of yet, but Howson seems to be reliably informed that Agbontohoma was one of the trialists.

“I am led to believe one of the youngsters who featured in the match is former Arsenal youngster David Agbontohoma. He’s a centre-back and currently on Southampton’s books. I’m still doing some digging into the other trialists,” Howson wrote.

This is certainly interesting to hear.

As Howson says, Agbontohoma is ex-Arsenal and currently turns out for Southampton, so he’s got a fair bit of pedigree behind him as you don’t end up on the books of those clubs unless you’re a talented player.

He’s actually played plenty of football this season, appearing 15 times in the PL2 for the Saints’ B team, but with his contract up in the summer, it seems as though he’s looking for alternative options.

Of course, coming in on trial doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s going to sign for Wednesday. After all, we saw Danny Simpson turn out for the U23s earlier this term before signing for Bristol City not long afterwards.
