Sheffield Wednesday announced yesterday that the club’s Chief Operating Officer Liam Dooley had left the club.
Dooley now drops down a league to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer with Shrewsbury Town, marking another backroom departure for the club in 2023.
Sheffield Wednesday‘s former head of recruitment David Downes left the club shortly after the Owls secured promotion, to take on the role of Sporting Director with Blackpool who had just been relegated to League One.
Dooley meanwhile had been with the Owls since 2019 and in the role of Chief Operating Officer since 2021.
His departure has left few surprised but many angered, with fans understandably believing that Dooley is another who doesn’t fancy working under controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri for much longer.
And journalist Alan Biggs has reacted to the news of Dooley’s departure. He posted on X:
“Not in the least bit surprised. A recurring pattern here & hugely embarrassing for a Championship club to lose a good man to one in League One. And Liam Dooley was – IS – a good man in my experience & many others. Sad & disturbing. Not surprising.”

Chansiri has often come under criticism. But right now is perhaps his toughest time at the club and many fans want to see him sell the club and move on.
And despite the positive appointment of Danny Rohl, Chansiri remains under criticism. And despite the arrival of Rohl, people like Dooley continue to leave the club, so there certainly seems to be some unrest in the backroom.
Chansiri now has the barebones of a boardroom and how the club fares off the pitch going forward remains to be seen.
Fans can only hope that Rohl makes matters on the pitch much better than they have been so far this season.
