George Byers has sent a one-word message to Ashley Fletcher alongside a snap of the pair in Sheffield Wednesday’s training session.
George Byers joined the Owls from Swansea City in August 2021 and was a vital player during their time in League One, netting 12 goals and providing five assists in two seasons before winning himself a new contract once they were promoted.
The midfielder has continued an important role under Danny Rohl this term, starting eight of his eleven games in charge over the past two months.
Byers has racked up the second-most interceptions in the squad (26) and the second-most passes blocked (21), becoming a vital cog in Sheffield Wednesday‘s drastically improving form.
The same can’t be said for Ashley Fletcher though. The striker joined the Owls on loan in the summer and is yet to score a goal after making 18 appearances in the Championship.
Fletcher has only managed three starts all season though, while he has only managed 83 minutes of action under Rohl.
The 28-year-old’s performances have so far been underwhelming, but that hasn’t stopped Byers for sharing his appreciation for his teammate.
Taking to Instagram, Byers posted a training photo of the pair on his story with the caption ‘Mukka’, alongside two peace hand signs.
What happens to Ashley Fletcher in January?
George Byer’s post is a sign of great friendship and high team spirits at Hillsborough, with players needing a brilliant relationship off the pitch as well as on it – but that doesn’t seem to be helping Ashley Fletcher’s lack of form.
Danny Rohl has done a brilliant job at bringing out the best of some players, such as Callum Paterson, Bailey Cadamarteri and Akin Famewo.
However, Fletcher looks far from the standard required to battle relegation successfully.
The forward is one of 25 players that currently make up Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship squad, and he is one that they could probably handle losing in January to make way for others.
Momo Diaby will be waiting on a place in the squad in January and the Owls will have to offload some outcasts to bring in the likes of Diaby and any signings to help retain their status in the second tier.
Fletcher himself should also consider whether staying in Yorkshire is the right move for him.
