Despite transfer business starting very slowly for the Owls this summer, it’s still been a very hectic month for Sheffield Wednesday.
They have a new manager in place in Xisco Munoz and he oversaw his first game in charge last week – a 1-1 draw away at York City.
It marks the start of Sheffield Wednesday’s pre-season and it’s arguably their most important pre-season in years, with the club seemingly very far behind in their preparations for the 2023/24 season.
But reports linking the club with potential new signings have ramped up in the past week, with one name consistently mentioned being Troy Deeney.
Speculation began after Deeney congratulated Munoz on his Wednesday appointment on Twitter, before Munoz was quizzed on a potential swoop for the 35-year-old free agent.
“You know I have a good relationship with Troy. He is a good person and I love him. I have a lot of contact with him.
“But right now is the moment for what we can improve with all the situations. We are putting the focus on what the team needs and how we can stay in a good situation in the Championship. We are trying to find the players to improve the team.
“We are assessing the team and today we have got a better idea of what we can improve. Now is the moment for working.”
Then earlier today, a report in Daily Mail’s Transfer Confidential revealed that Wednesday are in talks with Deeney over a potential player/coach role at Hillsborough ahead of next season.
Another name said to be on Wednesday’s radar is free agent goalkeeper Axel Werner. Reports in Spain (via The Star) say that Sheffield Wednesday are keeping tabs on Werner, 27, who’s just been let go by Spanish side Elche – the former Atletic Madrid man is also of interest to Crystal Palace.
Elsewhere, defender and fan favourite Liam Palmer recently revealed that he’s had to undergo minor surgery on an ongoing injury, but he says he’s recovering well after missing the game v York City.
Palmer said:
“It was a great end to last season, it’s been short break for everyone. I got a bit of family time on holiday and things, and then made my way over to Germany for some minor surgery over there that was planned towards the back end of last season. I’m recovering well.”
He added:
“I can’t wait to get involved. I’m doing my work on the side at the moment, hitting some really good targets, physios are really happy with how it’s gone, and hopefully I’ll be back soon.”
Sheffield Wednesday’s next pre-season friendly is in Spain v Murcia on Tuesday next week.
