Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Lucas Joao has reacted to something ‘amazing’ that Barry Bannan did recently.
Barry Bannan has hit the headlines for all the right reasons this week, after it was confirmed that he had raised over £75,000 for charity.
The Sheffield Wednesday midfielder became ambassador to The Children’s Hospital Charity in January, before hosting his first fundraiser at Mercure St Paul’s Hotel & Spa.
Fans were given the opportunity to buy tickets to the event, in which they would get to meet a number of former and current footballers, as well as Danny Rohl, while Steve Bracknall hosted Q&As, Jon McClure put on a musical performance and the attendees enjoyed a three-course meal.
Dominic Iorfa, Josh Windass, Liam Palmer, Cameron Dawson, Callum Paterson, Michael Smith and Will Vaulks all made an appearance as they looked to show support for the Owls captain and his favoured charity.
Journalist Joe Crann hailed Bannan as an ‘absolute credit’ to Sheffield Wednesday after the event came to a close, and that was before it had even been announced how much money had been raised.
Since then, Rob Gurruchaga, the event organiser, has said: “We at the Charity are so grateful to everyone who made Sunday possible. To raise £75,000 is incredible and it’s a testament to everyone who attended. Thank you so much to Jon McClure, Steve Bracknall, Pete McKee, the Mercure, the Wednesday Team, our Charity volunteers, and every single Sheffield Wednesday fan who contributed to the amazing fundraising total.
“Of course, we want to give an extra special thank you to Barry Bannan, our Charity ambassador. His support was instrumental to this event and will help to change lives at Sheffield Children’s.”
Bannan has now received even further praise from his former teammate Lucas Joao, who took to Instagram to write: “King 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿”.
A lot of love for Barry Bannan
The 30-year-old spent four years playing alongside Bannan at Hillsborough and was clearly one of many that were fond of him.
Bannan was appointed Owls captain the same year that Joao arrived at the club, and he has since guided the team through some highs and lows, as well as four different managers in four years.
The number of players that turned up at the veteran’s charity event shows their support and relationship with one another, while it is just another reason as to why this squad are enjoying significantly more success than they were earlier in the campaign.
