Preslav Borukov has admitted that he is still a Sheffield Wednesday fan, despite being released by the club in 2020.
Speaking to The Star, the forward revealed that he still follows the Owls ‘every week’ and is hopeful they can avoid relegation from the Championship.
Preslav Borukov moved from his native Bulgaria to join Sheffield Wednesday‘s academy in 2016 and was a regular fixture in the Owls’ youth sides, whilst also training with the first team. The striker was named on the bench for a Premier League defeat to Wigan Athletic in January 2020, as well as an FA Cup fourth round clash days earlier, however he failed to make his senior debut.
Borukov was then released by Garry Monk at Sheffield Wednesday the following summer and soon returned to his home country. He is now on his fourth club since leaving Hillsborough, playing for Bulgarian side Arda Kardzhali.
Despite struggling to make an impact on the first team and eventually being let go without an appearance to his name, Borukov clearly still has a soft spot for the club where he spent four years.
“I follow Wednesday every week,” he told The Star.
“I may not be part of the club but I still feel like a part of the club. You don’t realise that feeling until the moment you leave. I can’t always follow the games, I follow the scores and what is happening and when the big games are on TV, I watch them. I watched the Peterborough game, which was incredible. I do follow what is happening.
“I hope all the Sheffield Wednesday fans keep positive during these problems. Things will get better and I am sure they can stay in the league. I wish everybody well.”
Do Sheffield Wednesday need more Preslav Borukovs?
Preslav Borukov owns Sheffield Wednesday absolutely nothing and probably has every right to be frustrated that he wasn’t given more of a chance.
However, his support and love for the Owls is a great sentiment to the feeling around Hillsborough at the time.
It is great to hear how enjoyable of a place it was to be, even when you weren’t playing regularly, or at all in this case.
While it didn’t work out for him, Borukov’s attitude is exactly what Sheffield Wednesday need now. Someone who is trying their hardest but doesn’t feel entitled to anything. He is a much better role model than those players that may be more talented, but are only there for themselves.
