Don Hutchinson hails former Sheffield Wednesday star Chris Waddle
It’s rare that a Sheffield Wednesday player earns praise from a Sheffield United man, but that’s happened here.
Former Blade Don Hutchinson recently posted on X, saying that former Owls winger Chris Waddle is one of the ‘most underrated players of the 90s’:
The now 63-year-old Waddle made his name with Newcastle United, then having spells with Spurs and Marseille before arriving at Hillsborough in 1992.
He spent four years with the Owls, making 109 league appearances and scoring 10 goals from the flanks, with his trickery and pace highlighted in the above video.
Leaving in 1996, the 62-cap former England international would go on to have fleeting spells with a number of clubs, many of which in the lower leagues around South Yorkshire including Worksop Town, Stocksbridge Park Steels, and Hallam FC.
Today, Waddle works regularly as a pundit and can often be heard commentating on games on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Days of Waddle are a far cry for the Owls
The 90s were certainly the glory years for Sheffield Wednesday, with Waddle a poster boy for that era. Whereas the 2020s are the dark years.
Despite the club earning promotion last year, giving fans fond memories of the Peterborough United semi-final and the Wembley final vs Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday are a club in a mess.
