A former Sheffield Wednesday star was in attendance for Sheffield Wednesday’s ‘electric’ clash with Norwich City last night.

Sheffield Wednesday looked set for a miserable evening when some poor decision making in defence saw them concede twice inside 16 minutes on home soil.

Norwich City’s poor away record left the Owls with a glimmer of hope as they looked to climb out of the relegation zone, but the atmosphere that occupied Hillsborough soon died down.

Danny Rohl didn’t give up though, making four substitutions at half-time as they looked to bounce back.

It certainly worked, with substitute Will Vaulks coming on to pick up two assists as Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith led the comeback.

Wednesday were unable to get a third goal, but fans were left ecstatic as they claimed a point from the Canaries to take them level on points with 21st place.

It was a crazy night in Sheffield and one that supporters will remember fondly, while some may have also spotted a familiar face in the stands too.

Glenn Whelan’s appreciation for Hillsborough

Former midfielder Glenn Whelan took to X to react to the match, accompanied by a photo of his view of the pitch.

Whelan wrote: “28k + fans on a Tuesday night. Hillsborough one of the last of the old school stadiums noise does be electric. Thanks for the invite @swfc for the 5000 game.”

Glenn Whelan joined Sheffield Wednesday from Manchester City in 2004 and spent four years with the club, helping them win the League One play-offs the year after his arrival.

Is there anything more important than the Owls’ ‘electric’ support?

The 40-year-old has played all over the Premier League and EFL, but he definitely appreciates the ‘electric’ atmosphere at his former home.

That ‘electric’ atmosphere is what will have helped pick up so many points this season and many previous ones too.

Wednesday looked set for defeat last night, but it will have undoubtedly been the supporters acting as the twelfth man that really spurred them onto fight back.

Even when the team aren’t at their best, the crowd at Hillsborough will never let them down.
