Sheffield Wednesday have named Xisco Munoz as their new boss.
It comes more than two weeks after Darren Moore’s shock exit from the club, but Sheffield Wednesday can now crack on with their summer preparations as they gear up for their return to the Championship.
Munoz is bets known for his time in charge of Watford. He took charge soon after the start of the 2020/21 season and would go on to guide the Hornets to promotion to the Premier League, before losing his job soon after the start of the following season.
He boasts the joint-best win record of the Pozzo era at Vicarage Road, sharing the record with former Watford favourite Slavisa Jokanovic after winning 21 of his 36 games in charge.
And former Watford skipper Troy Deeney has had his say on Munoz’s move to Hillsborough, tweeting:
Deeney played in Munoz’s promotion-winning season at Watford, but injury limited him to just 19 appearances in the league that year – he scored seven times.
After two seasons at Birmingham City, the 35-year-old Deeney is now a free agent.
The season ahead for Munoz and Wednesday
It’s certainly a rather wildcard appointment. But Munoz worked wonders at Watford and like Deeney says, this appointment could be the right time for both Wednesday and Munoz.
He’ll surely have a point to prove after losing his job at Watford in the Premier League, and Wednesday are in need of a manager who can work well with owner Dejphon Chansiri and get to work in this summer’s transfer window.
Munoz may yet target some of his old Watford comrades, with Deeney acrually available on a free transfer. The Owls need all the recruits they can get this summer but with Munoz now in place, the club can really press on with their transfer plans.
