Former Sheffield Wednesday man Dennis Adeniran left the club at the end of last season, being one of several players who was released.
The former Everton and Fulham youth player joined Sheffield Wednesday as a free agent in 2021.
In two seasons at the club, the midfielder made 41 League One outings, with 23 in the last campaign as well as two goals.
Injury hampered his time with the Owls, though. Adeniran spent a lot of time on the sidelines and didn’t come off the bench in Wednesday’s play-off comeback game vs Peterborough United, or the final vs Barnsley.
Upon his release, Adeniran eventually signed for Portuguese outfit Portimonense in what was a surprise move, but he’s only just made his debut.
Injury had kept Adeniran out until last month. He made it on the bench when his side played Covilha away and he was on the bench once again for the following game vs Estoril.
But in his side’s last outing, the Englishman came off the bench late on vs Braga, playing six minutes in what was a 6-1 defeat against the Portuguese giants.
Former Owls boss Darren Moore was a fan of Adeniran’s, playing him regularly when he was available having previously labelled him as a ‘wonderful’ signing for the club.
Adeniran to take on Portugal…
Adeniran landed a good move to a top flight European club in Portimonense; coincidentally where the Owls have loaned Momo Diaby from.
And after making his debut, he now has a chance to show his club what he’s capable of; he’s a very well-rounded midfielder who has an eye for goal and an eye for a pass, and if he can impress in the Portuguese top flight then he could give himself some really good options going forward.
It’s not going to be easy though, and there’s always the fear that he could struggle more with injuries like he has done over the past few years.
But we may well hear a bit more of Adeniran’s name over the next few months and we could one day see him returning to English football.
