Sheffield Wednesday fans will be chomping at the bit to get the new season off to a good start.

Despite only avoiding relegation by three points, the Owls ended the campaign in really promising form.

Having now brought in nine new players and tied down a number of players to new contracts, there is a lot of excitement around Hillsborough heading into Sheffield Wednesday’s opening fixture this weekend.

Danny Rohl has already made it clear that he hopes to guide Wednesday to a top-half finish next term, however they have now been told they could even claim a play-off spot.

EFL pundit Ryan Dilks believes the Owls need to do one more thing before they can push for a top-six finish.

Sheffield Wednesday need to make more signings

Speaking on the Second Tier podcast, Dilks said: “[James] Beadle in particular, I think he’s huge because he looks like such a talented young goalkeeper. Lowe, great signing. Olaf Kobacki is an interesting attacker, scored quite a few goals in Poland last season. So I’m interested to see how he takes to the Championship. The signings are mostly good, aren’t they?

“I haven’t been taken aback by Wednesday’s business, despite the amount of players who have come in. But the squad’s got a mix now of exciting young talent like Anthony Musaba, Di’Shon Bernard, as well as the old guard, such as Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer. They definitely still need more additions, especially up front. They simply have to get a striker in before the window closes.

“However, I wouldn’t rule out a Sheffield Wednesday top-six push.”

Ike Ugbo can be a game-changer if he rejoins the Owls

Wednesday have bolstered most positions in their squad and have already brought in a new striker in Charlie McNeill, however the 20-year-old doesn’t have a Championship appearance to his name.

The Owls are certainly trying though, with their pursuit of Ike Ugbo potentially dragging out to the final days of the window.

Top-six clubs rarely get that far without having a proven goalscorer in their ranks – Leeds United, Southampton and Norwich all had multiple players who reached double figures.

While that might not happen for Rohl’s side, bringing back Ugbo would make a significant difference to where they could finish next term.

The Canadian has the ability to turn draws into wins and is a must-sign for the Owls this month.
