Sheffield Wednesday could be on course for relegation to League One, and that could spark a vast summer of change at the club.
Not only do Sheffield Wednesday have a horde of first-team players out of contract in the summer, but they could also risk losing beloved boss Danny Rohl.
The 34-year-old has worked wonders since arriving at the club back in October, bringing the Owls to within four points of safety with 13 games left to play.
Relegation would surely see Rohl garner interest from Championship clubs or teams overseas.
But Rohl has built a very strong connection with the Hillsborough faithful, and despite the possibility of relegation and the off-field controversies at Sheffield Wednesday, Rohl may be inclined to stay.
Ryan Dilks thinks Danny Rohl should ‘get out’ of Sheffield Wednesday
Speaking on The Second Tier podcast, EFL pundit Ryan Dilks gave a clear verdict on Rohl at Wednesday, urging him to ‘get out’ of the club, should he get the chance to.
Dilks said:
“From a Danny Rohl perspective, if you get the chance to get out of Sheffield Wednesday so you don’t have to work with Chansiri anymore, you’re going to take it, aren’t you?”
He added:
“He definitely deserves better than relegation because I think he’s done a fantastic job in just turning the tide with Wednesday.”
Summer will decide Rohl’s fate under Dejphon Chansiri
There’s no doubting that working with an owner like Dejphon Chansiri has its drawbacks.
Rohl was limited to what he could do in the January transfer window, and it’s since then that fans have been protesting strongly against Chansiri‘s ownership.
And given how Rohl has got this Sheffield Wednesday side playing since his arrival; fast-paced, high-pressing, and overall effective, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if clubs took a punt on him in the summer.
But Wednesday would surely need to be relegated for Rohl to consider leaving, and right now it looks like the Owls have a god chance of staying up.
And despite the Chansiri factor, Dilks’ comments may be misinformed as Rohl has a great relationship with the Sheffield Wednesday fans.
Seen in wins over Birmingham City and especially Millwall last weekend, Rohl is hugely passionate about the club and shows a genuine delight whenever the club picks up a good result.
Time will tell what the future holds for Rohl in S6, with another tricky home game on the cards against Bristol City this weekend.
