Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has this afternoon told the press why he chose to appoint Xisco Muñoz as the club’s new manager. The Spaniard was appointed yesterday afternoon as Darren Moore’s replacement at Hillsborough.
The decision to part company with the promotion-winning manager was a shock. Just a few weeks after the Owls beat Barnsley at Wembley in the League One Play-Off Final, the decision was made for Moore and Wednesday to discontinue their relationship.
After a rigorous interview process, Muñoz has been selected as the club’s new manager. The 42-year-old last managed in England during the 2020/21 campaign; leading Watford to the Premier League by winning automatic promotion.
Now, Chansiri has been quizzed on why he chose Muñoz. Other names were linked with the job with Steven Gerrard, Dean Smith and Nathan Jones all thought to be in the running to replace the departed Moore.
Chansiri believes he has the right man and he’s told the club’s official YouTube channel: “He’s ambitious, hungry and he plays attacking football. I had a tough decision and that is why I took a few days to decide. I believe we have the best one at the moment and he’s the best choice. He’s going to improve our team and we have ambition for the future.”

This does look like an intriguing appointment. Excitement perhaps isn’t the right word at this stage given that he’s not done much since leading Watford to promotion.
Still, the comments from the club’s owner do offer some optimism to the supporters. The fact he is an attack-minded manager will certainly have pricked the ears of the fan base.
Wednesday are a club with proud traditions. One of those is the style of play and with over 30,000 fans coming to every home game, they won’t accept poor football.
Muñoz looks like the sort of manager that can come up with an attack-minded plan. If he can get Wednesday to execute the sort of football that Watford did, the club could be in for a really successful season.
