David Stockdale left Sheffield Wednesday this summer and he was left stunned by something that happened yesterday. The goalkeeper lined up for York City as they drew 1-1 with the club he recently departed.
The custodian played his part last season as Wednesday won promotion to the Championship. He signed ahead of the 2022/23 campaign and made 27 appearances for the Owls.
Dropping into the National League has perhaps surprised a few. Although the stopper is 37-years-old now, it’s perhaps a bit surprising that he’s dropped into non-league at this stage.
Stockdale played for 45 minutes of yesterday’s clash at York’s new stadium. Afterwards, he admitted that he was pleasantly surprised by one aspect of facing off against the club he recently left.
He told Yorkshire Live: “It was definitely a day that I will remember. When I came out for the second half and I got applause from both sides, it’s not often that happens.
“I’m just really glad that I mean something to both fans and it will be something that I remember for a long time.”
Stockdale was allowed to leave Wednesday at the end of his existing contract. The Owls now have Cameron Dawson as the club’s only senior stopper and perhaps Xisco Munoz will look to address that.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to Stockdale that he was applauded. He did well for the Owls when called upon and he managed to keep 12 clean sheets from his 27 outings.
Wednesday will surely look for a new goalkeeper this summer. Although Pierce Charles is highly rated by the Owls, he will perhaps serve some time out on loan before getting a senior chance.
Stockdale has been a model professional throughout his career. He’s always given his all wherever he’s played his football and that’s why the Wednesday faithful were keen to give him a good reception yesterday.
The experienced performer will go down as a Wednesday promotion winner. Nobody will ever take that away from him and ultimately, he will always be welcomed back at Hillsborough.
