Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has suggested that he’s not in talks to bring Mark McGuinness back to Hillsborough. The centre-back was on loan with the Owls for the first half of the 2022/23 campaign.
Some suggestions since promotion had been that the youngster was set for a return to Wednesday. It would seem, however, that McGuinness isn’t a name that has been discussed over a transfer.
The 22-year-old was recalled by Cardiff in January, following 24 appearances for the Owls after arriving in the summer. He was then regular for the Bluebirds, playing 17 times in Sabri Lamouchi’s team.
It’s not clear what the future holds for the man who came through the youth ranks at Arsenal. He does only have a year remaining on his existing deal and that could tempt Cardiff into a sale.
Despite some claims that McGuinness could be on his way back to South Yorkshire, Moore has seemingly dismissed the notion of a return for the youngster this summer.
He told Yorkshire Live: “Speaking truthfully, Mark is not somebody that we have spoken about at any great length.
“In terms of any of the players out there, there are none we are talking to at the moment because I think it’s essential that myself and the chairman get together first.”
Clinton Morrison is a huge fan of McGuinness. He’s previously called him outstanding following one of his appearances for Cardiff.

Perhaps now that Wednesday are back in the Championship, Moore feels that a better central defender can be obtained during the summer.
McGuinness did a good job when he signed for the club last summer. He was a regular in the team and Wednesday only lost once when he played in League One.
It does promise to be an exciting time for the Owls following promotion. With several players out of contract, it’s clear that some discussions will need to be had with the current crop.
Plenty of new faces will arrive at the club though. A summer of upheaval looks likely on Penistone Road and Moore will hope to ensure the team is ready for the big kick-off in August.
