Danny Rohl has explained that he’s been impressed with Sheffield Wednesday player Marvin Johnson in training. The left-sided player was given his first start of the season in Saturday’s 4-0 drubbing to Millwall.
Johnson has endured a frustrating time of things since Wednesday won promotion to the Championship. He was completely banished from the first-team reckoning under Xisco Munoz and it’s not been a happy time.
Rohl have arrived at Hillsborough and given everyone a clean slate. That includes Johnson and he’s now made a couple of appearances under the German boss.
Wednesday boss Rohl impressed with Johnson
It’s good to see that the 32-year-old has got his head down and is working hard. Rohl has suggested that he’s impressed with the commitment from Johnson and perhaps more game time will be forthcoming.
The manager told Yorkshire Live: “He’s been lively in training and it’s the reason why I took him (chose for the squad). We know in the next months there will be periods where we have matches on average about every three days. So it’s a little bit about rotating the squad.
“Everybody has to be ready and this is the biggest thing we need in these next two weeks: to be able to perform for 90 minutes and more.”
Johnson can play role at Hillsborough this season
Although he’s hardly considered a young player, Johnson earned his crack at the Championship with his Wednesday form last season. He made 50 appearances during 2022/23 and registered 14 assists.
Johnson brings some balance to the team with his left-footed nature. One of the issues that Munoz found was that he was often deploying unnatural options on that side of the pitch.
It will be music to the ears of Johnson that the current Wednesday boss is appreciative of his efforts. Now, he will hope to get a regular place back in the team and make himself undroppable.
