Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles might get the chance to make his debut this season if he continues to work hard this season. That’s the view of new head coach Danny Rohl who has been praising the youngster.
The custodian is a burgeoning talent on the books at Hillsborough. He spent the pre-season campaign rotating with Cameron Dawson, with Xisco Munoz utilising him in a number of friendly matches.
Charles has been a frequent member of the in-form Wednesday under-21 team this season. Now, Rohl has suggested that he’s been quite impressed with what he’s seen from the youngster in training.
Rohl hints at debut for Charles at some point
Wednesday have to get a bit better at giving their homegrown youngsters a platform to play in the first-team. The academy ranks are brimming with talent and it’s about time they were used.

In Rohl, the club might have a manager who is more willing to give the club’s younger players a chance. Charles was the topic of a recent discussion and this season might be the season he makes his debut.
The head coach told The Star: “He’s very good on the grass. He can play football and he has a lot of solutions, which is something that I like. He’s trained very hard with the first team, and if he keeps training hard then maybe there’s a chance to come in.
“But at the moment I’m very happy with both of the goalkeepers that are here, and it’s a challenge. I think the goalkeeping group is strong, and that’s important for us.”
Charles has a bright future at Wednesday
The talented teenager is undoubtedly going to get a chance to shine at Wednesday at some point. In the short term, however, and with Wednesday in their current predicament, he might have to wait patiently.
There is time on his side though. In the here and now he must focus on training hard each and every single day, whilst also maintaining a solid level when he plays for the under-21s.
Charles is working with two decent goalkeepers on a daily basis in Cameron Dawson and Devis Vasquez. That can only put him in good stead and shape him up well for the future.
