Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has admitted that it will be a ‘tough race’ for his players to try and avoid relegation, but he believes they can do it.
Wednesday have had the worst start in Championship history, and the worst start in the second tier since the 1970’s.
They have failed to win any of their first 13 games this season, only managing to pick up three points after draws with Huddersfield Town, Middlesbrough and Leeds United.
Owls boss still has belief
Speaking to the BBC following defeat at Plymouth Argyle, Danny Rohl said that it would be a ‘tough race’ to stay up, but believes they can with Wednesday fans’ ‘unbelievable support’.
“We know it will be a tough race until the end of the season but I think the guys are ready for this.
“For me it was clear when I took the job it would be tough.
“I can see a direction for how we want to play, it’s not about 45 minutes or 60 minutes, it’s about 96 minutes.
“There are still 99 points to get and we can do this but we have to start taking points and we have the next opportunity on Sunday.
“It’s about the next opponent and at home we will have unbelievable support. We’ll do everything we can to get the first win.”
Rohl still confident
Whilst most fans are not confident of survival, Rohl is clearly not getting himself down about it.
He will want to impress in his first role as a first team manager, after previously being assistant at Southampton and RB Leipzig, and a coach with the German national team.
Wednesday host fellow strugglers and Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United on Sunday afternoon, in Rohl’s first game in charge at Hillsborough.
