Sheffield Wednesday have suffered yet another injury setback.
While Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed some brilliant results over the last six weeks or so, there has been plenty of concern regarding their long list of absentees.
The Owls have won six of their last ten games in all competitions, and have done so without a number of key players.
Callum Paterson, Will Vaulks, Akin Famewo, Dominic Iorfa, Juan Delgado, Momo Diaby, George Byers, Jeff Hendrick, Josh Windass, Mallik Wilks and Michael Smith have all endured spells out of the team recently – whether it be due to injury or suspension.
While a majority of the squad have returned to full fitness, Callum Paterson remains an absence and there doesn’t seem to be any positive update on his recovery.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Danny Rohl confirmed that the 29-year-old will be sidelined for longer than expected.
As per The Star, Rohl said: “With Callum it’s difficult at the moment, he will be unavailable for the next bit of time, but we’ll have a look at what we can do.
“It’s not just about his head, he also has a problem with his knee, and it’s about doing what we have to do to make him fit as soon as possible. At the moment he’s not available.”
Can Sheffield Wednesday cope without Callum Paterson?
Sheffield Wednesday have desperately needed all their key players to recover and get back in the team given the importance of the second half of the campaign – even if they have handed it very well with a threadbare squad.
However, Callum Paterson is a massive loss and his versatility would really come in handy for Danny Rohl over the next few months.
The former Cardiff man has really proved himself this term and his hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, while his leadership and commitment is really something they could do with as they look to avoid relegation.
Paterson has played all over the pitch this term – mainly featuring on the right under Rohl, but also taking up positions at right-back and even as a centre forward.
Sheffield Wednesday’s business in the transfer window will hopefully mean Paterson doesn’t have to get used in so many different roles, though at least we know he is perfectly capable if needed.
