Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has dropped an update on one forgotten player.
Sheffield Wednesday signed a horde of new players last summer.
Former boss Xisco Munoz welcomed some good, and some not so good players to Hillsborough, with the likes of Di’Shon Bernard, Anthony Musaba, and Djeidi Gassama perhaps being the pick of the bunch.
One player who’s undoubtedly struggled since arriving in S6 though is Juan Delgado.
The Chilean international joined from Portuguese outfit Pacos de Ferreira and after 10 Championship appearances, picked up an injury which has kept him sidelined since the start of October with a hip injury.
Danny Rohl says Juan Delgado may never play for Sheffield Wednesday again
Speaking to The Star ahead of this weekend’s Championship clash vs Bristol City, Rohl gave an injury update on the 30-year-old Delgado, saying:
“It’s a bit of a never-ending story. I think it’s really tough to see him, but he’s working hard in the gym. At the moment there hasn’t been a time where he’s close to team training and in this case we have to wait.
“Maybe there is an opportunity, but it could also be that he cannot play for Wednesday again. It’s difficult to say at the moment what will happen in the next months.”
The length of Delgado’s Sheffield Wednesday deal was not disclosed, though Rohl’s above comments may suggest that the wide-man signed a one-year deal last summer and could ultimately be released this summer.
A tough situation, but that’s football
Delgado seems to have one of those niggling injuries that can keep a player out for a very long time.
And it’s unfortunate given the circumstances; likely out of contract in the summer and perhaps not having the chance to earn himself a new deal.
In his 10 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, Delgado was largely hit and miss. But he never featured under Rohl, and like so many others in the team, Delgado could’ve really flourished under the German.
Delgado’s attributes; a fast-paced player with good control, and versatility to play as a winger or wing-back and maybe even on either flank, could’ve been really useful for Sheffield Wednesday in this second half of the season.
But Rohl’s comment about Delgado potentially never playing for Wednesday again definitely seems to suggest that he’s out of contract in the summer and still a while away from a return to fitness.
The club might have to be cut-throat with Delgado if he shows no signs of a return to action any time soon, then from there it could be a tough road for Delgado.
