Sheffield Wednesday were trounced 4-0 by Millwall yesterday and boss Danny Rohl has discussed why he omitted Michael Smith. The striker wasn’t involved and the Owls missed his physicality against the Lions.
Wednesday really are in a perilous position right now. They’re nine points adrift of safety and look to be cruising towards an immediate return to League One.
Yesterday, Smith wasn’t included in the squad. Lee Gregory was also omitted from the 20-man squad and the pair’s omissions left some questions to be asked of Rohl.
Rohl explains why Smith was missing for Wednesday
The decision to leave Smith out was purely down to fitness. The player has picked up an injury and Rohl suggested that the international break has come at the right time.
He told The Star: “He picked up an injury and was not ready to play today, that’s the only reason that he was out… Hopefully, he is back for the next game, but we’ll have a look at him from day to day – this is a good thing about the international break.”
Smith is an important player in the Wednesday squad. He finished as the club’s top goalscorer last season and the Owls desperately need him to be fit and firing.
Wednesday need goals and quickly
The Owls are desperately struggling at both ends of the pitch. They can’t score goals and perhaps more worryingly they can’t seem to stop conceding them either.
Smith is a big player in the Wednesday dressing room. His teammates feed off the energy and leadership qualities that he brings and the hope will be that he’s back in the fold soon.
Wednesday can’t rely solely on Smith scoring goals. Others are going to have to start contributing too and things really are getting a little bit desperate for Wednesday right now.
