The club of a reported Sheffield Wednesday target have strengthened in his position.

According to Yorkshire Live, the former Wednesday loanee Frederico Venancio is one of centre-backs the Owls have in their sights this summer – although that was before last week’s arrival of Chey Dunkley from Wigan.

If Wednesday are still keen, however, then their chances appear to have increased after Venancio’s employers Vitoria Guimaraes signed Abdul Mumin on a four-year deal from FC Nordsjælland.

Mumin – who was linked with a move to Sheffield United earlier this year – takes Vitoria’s tally of central defenders to five, with Venancio, Pedro Henrique, Easah Suliman and Yann Aurel Bisseck his rivals for a place.

Whether his presence is enough to free Venancio, however, remains to be seen. And speculation in Portugal suggests that Wednesday are not alone in their Venancio interest, even if it is.

The Owls also have plenty of options in Venancio’s part of the pitch – although the futures of some of those at Hillsborough, for example the previously exiled Joost van Aken, are as yet uncertain.
