Sheffield Wednesday have recently been linked with a move for Manchester United midfielder Charlie Savage.
Reports this week have revealed that Sheffield Wednesday, Swansea City, and Wigan Athletic are all keen on Savage, 20, who could be let go either on loan or on a permanent basis this summer.
And a separate report has since credited Reading with an interest in Savage – the son of former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage.
But ex-Sheffield Wednesday man Carlton Palmer believes that the potential signing of Savage isn’t one that Xisco Munoz and Sheffield Wednesday need to make this summer.
Speaking to Football League World about the link, Palmer said:
“Charlie has clearly got a bright future ahead of him, but right now the Owls need experienced, proven Championship players. The Championship is going to be a strong and competitive league next season. Experience will be key to their survival in the league.”
Whether or not Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in Savage is legitimate, it’s been claimed by Football Insider that Savage is now in talks with Reading over a potential move to the League One club.
Experience or youth?
Sheffield Wednesday face a tough 2023/24 season in the Championship and so they definitely need a bit of experience in the side, like Palmer says.
But they have a fair few experienced players already and so Munoz should have one eye on the future and on bringing in players who the Owls could develop and turn into assets.
Savage is a player who could become exactly that, but it looks like he’s favouring a move to Reading right now and that may be a sensible one, given his lack of experience in the Championship.
Expect the Owls to move on quickly from this one. Munoz will no doubt have a number of names on his transfer radar this summer and hopefully we’ll see some new players arriving at Hillsborough in the very near future.
